5 Things You Should Never Buy Second Hand
Buying things second hand can be a great way to save money. But not all second hand bargains are worth it. In fact, there are quite a few things you shouldn’t buy second hand. And there are these five things that you should never buy second hand. Never-ever, no matter how cheap they are!
I know that some people buy shoes second hand, but I strongly advise against it. Even if they look clean, there is always a danger for you to get nail fungus by simply wearing them. Sure, you could buy second hand shoes and disinfect them, but that will most likely ruin the inner lining of the shoe. Another reason to not buy second hand shoes is that shoes mould themselves to match the shape of the wearer’s foot. No two feet are alike, so there’s a 99% chance that you won’t feel comfortable wearing shoes that have been worn by someone else.
OK, I put shoes as number 1 because I didn’t even think that there are people who would happily wear someone else’s underwear. A quick search on eBay proved me wrong, though. NEVER buy second hand underwear! It’s disgusting, totally unhygienic, and dangerous (think yeast infection that survives the washing machine)!
3. Mattresses and Upholstery
If you’re thinking that using a second hand mattress is fine, you are wrong. Not only can it be uncomfortable, but a second hand mattress conceals a number of nasty invisible “surprises”. They are dead skin cells, bed bugs and dust mites, and even invisible traces of other people’s body fluids. Imagine a sweaty snoring stranger on your lovely mattress. Did I hear “Ewwwwww!”? EXACTLY! Same goes for duvets, pillows, and bed sheets.
4. Pots and Pans
While it may seem a good idea to get some pots and pans second hand, it’s not worth the money. For a start, they may have scratches that are not very easy to spot. They can also smell weird when you start cooking and they can be rusty. There are plenty of affordable new options at your local supermarket and IKEA, so don’t bother buying pans second hand.
Another obvious one, but a lot of people are getting hats and other headwear like crash helmets second hand. These are also a danger to your health and the health of your children. I actually knew someone who got their son a second hand bike with a helmet and the boy got lice of it…
I’m sure a lot of people will find this article stupid because what I’m saying here is obvious. But those of you who love buying used things should remember that they should never buy these five things second hand.
